Friday was the last ‘normal’ day at Eton and as usual we packed a lot in. We started with our final round of lessons including Physics, where we set off water rockets from the rooftops of Eton and Philosophy, where we finally debated for the last time whether the water rocket was really a water rocket or just a collection of bottles and elastic bands with some water in. No, not really. We had to argue for and against the existence of god. In my case, mostly against. I do believe in the Invisible Pink Unicorn though.
We also had some more History – consistently the most interesting subject of the week which concluded in some History of Art showing in painting form how man has progressed from “Hey, I own nature!” to “Holy shit, nature’s fighting back!” And also some Maths, which proved something very interesting about 1.618. (See – more evidence against god. If god existed the ‘magic number’ would be something hilariously simple, like 42 or something.)
After lunch we then did what is called ‘Team Activities’ of the type that companies send their reluctant employees on so they can bond. Luckily we actually liked each other by this point, so it was good fun
The next activity was just absolutely, amazingly cool for a geek like me. We got to visit Eton’s historical library, and actually touch stuff instead of peering behind glass! My fingerprints are now on Elizabeth I’s signature, and the Gutenberg Bible – the first book ever printed! Wow! And we also saw the first ever printed book cock-up where they had printed a header wrong and then lazily crossed it out…
In summary – Eton’s library rocks!
Know that tomorrow afternoon we’d be on our way home, Friday evening was our end of summer school party. Held on some mysterious island somewhere on the Thames, it featured food, fizzy drinks, a disco and most wonderfully – Frisbee. Plus a scary looking Atif, a slightly drunk Katie and a lovely looking Mary caught here dancing with Adam.
And so we came to the final day of Eton… in the 6th and final part of my Eton Diary thingy.
The existence of God. I hated debating about that. There’s just no answer! Nobody knows so why waste time talking about it IMO!
Well, there is an answer, it just depends whether you accept it or not
True, still the magic number concept is quite incredible.
Katie went on the Ski trip, she was drunk on that alot as well.
Please feel free to publish as many details of this as you wish
I notice you don’t mention the little incident at the disco with matthew. Remember that?
I don’t believe I know what you’re talking about. However, rest assured savage censorship will block out whatever non-event you’re not referring to.
Hey look! http://ateenlife.blogspot.com/ – a distraction!
(Oh, and he *can’t* be all powerful )
Hey, have any good pics of Eton? Which house did you stay in?
The boys were in Wotton House, the girls in Timbralls. Didn’t take any pics myself I’m afraid…
