Happy Birthday Tash!
(Click read more to read my ‘flow of conciousness’ rant at iTunes – not recommended)
Yes, the iPod is a work of design genius blah blah blah – but why does iTunes need to fly in the face of all that? Sticking QuickTime in my tray is not the way to make me like you, and neither is demanding an immediate upgrade which then launching a browser window asking for an email address. In Windows Media Player, managing your music is simple. Click delete to delete. Add to Sync list, then sync to sync. “It just works.” With iTunes, it seems to rude to interrupt the automatic conversion and file format grabbing to ask if it would mind doing what I want it to do. This is also my file format bias, but stop wasting time converting WMA to AAC when you could just grab the codec and play it!
And Apple must have missed the memo that these nifty things called ‘folders’ have been invented allowing you to organise music logically. WMP is almost as bad in that respect – I must definitely do NOT want to ‘live in the library’ and would much rather use the Windows shell.
Aghhhhh – [breathe] – I’m OK. If I had to use iTunes I’m sure I would get used to it.
Edit – iPodService.exe running all the time?! That’s just wrrrrooong.
Double Edit – I love Windows… disabled the iPodService.exe and set it to startup when Natasha logs in only. Bliss!
Let go, forget folders, calm down.
You’re making this way too complicated. First of all, if you haven’t already, hit the ‘browse’ button. That makes it nicer.
Now just let iTunes sort out your folder – it does that for you, nice and logically.
Oh and get over the iPodService – it uses under a meg of virtual RAM.
It doesn’t anymore
In fairness – the iPod mini leaves completely the opposite impression on me. Just had a play with it and the click wheel is sexy, the games are very cool and overall it feels very well designed – I love that!
I think the difference is that the iPod software obviously has complete control over the machine, while I don’t want iTunes to control my music on the PC. If I was ‘switching over’ to iTunes it wouldn’t be so bad because I wouldn’t mind having all my music in an Apple format. But I use WMP, which can’t do m4a files, so having them all duplicated would be very annoying. Not to mention a waste of hard drive space!
Itunes is annoying when u try to open a MP3 bcoz it goes straight in2 Itunes making my brother angry when he finds music which isnt his in there!!
Use seperate accounts.
Dom – don’t create problems, restore the iPod service. You’re seeming a bit ‘I’m holding the fort because apple’s taking over my pc’. It’s use NO system resources that matter – it’s obviously there for a purpose. By all means nuke the Quicktime icon and startup program though.
WMP is so crap though – at least use Winamp and get some nice radio.
And go to Edit > Prefs > Importing and change it to MP3 to retain compatibility with other stuff.
"restore the iPod service"
It starts up when my sister logs on – won’t that work?
Sorry didn’t see that in your original post – damn teh edits.
Moving from one thing to another, got bored today and actually found out i used to call myself Rob_Somerset on here not so long ago, near anough when you first got comments on here
