The Daleks are back! Like, on TV! Finally, people will stop asking me about my nickname!
Seriously though, that was one hell of an episode.
Staying on the TV theme, the BBC are current broadcasting BBC 1, 2, 4 and News 24 live over the internet. Please note that these tests are likely to end soon, so for the moment:
Two great days in a row… how lovely.
[Update – as predicted, links now dead]Wow, that was so fun! Just got back from seeing The Kumars at Number 42 being filmed at Television Centre. Cast was excellent (watching Meera Syal fluff a joke by laughing too much is so cool) and the impromptu gags off screen were wonderful. Frankie Dettori and Joanna Lumley made great guests, Frankie in particular was very entertaining – when the cameras were off he seemed to relax even more and continued to chat for the audience.
And that’s not forgetting the warm-up act… I still can’t believe these things are free. Forget the cinema or theatre, just book some tickets for a TV show and turn up for a great night out. (And yes, it is smaller in real life, of course. Had to get the cliché in somewhere.)
Shout out to my wonderful cousin who turned up with many, many shopping bags and was surprised to discover a cloakroom service was not provided.
It’s typical of fans that Outpost Gallifrey stays online when Doctor Who was announced as returning, when Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper were cast, when the Dalek deal was negotiated and after the exciting premiere and huge ratings. Yet it goes down now as thousands panic over Eccleston’s decision to do only one series.
Don’t panic!
Christopher Eccleston is a brilliant actor who has launched the new series into a fantastic future. We have 12 brand new episodes in this series left to enjoy, plus a 60 minute Christmas Special. And then we get a second series, with a new doctor aided by the magnificent Rose. It’s common knowledge that even Tom Baker wound down as his reign went on, Chris will be leaving on a high and will be remembered for his great performance. Yes, I’d have liked to see him do a 2nd series, but please, regeneration has happened before in much more difficult circumstances.
Phew – now I can get back to speculating over the 10th Doctor. David Tennant seems the favourite so far, but in the world of Doctor Who, anything can happen…!
Cult sci-fi hero Doctor Who won the battle of prime time as 10 million viewers tuned in to watch the series return after a 16-year absence, figures revealed today.
The much-loved time traveller beat off competition from ITV’s Ant and Dec – and their guest David Beckham – to claim an average audience of 9.9 million on Saturday night.
Salford-born Christopher Eccleston became the ninth small screen Doctor in a special effects-packed comeback, with former pop star Billie Piper starring as his new sidekick.
The series, which was screened at 7pm, had an average audience share of 43.2% and hit a peak of 10.6 million viewers.
Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, which ran against Doctor Who, had an average of 7.2 million viewers, taking a 31.4% share.
The Geordie duo peaked with an 8.5 million audience, 37.5% of the viewing public.
Plea to Babbleblog members – use your Photoshop skills against the grinning twosome?
That was utterly fantastic… they’ve completely nailed Doctor Who for 2005. Yes, the plot was weak but only because it was a pilot and they had to grip the audience while introducing the characters. So story wise, I gave it 4 out of 5.
I know it was a success – my mum hated Doctor Who (“I don’t get it”) and was reluctatantly persuaded to watch it “just this once”… laughed at all the right places, will now tune in next week! And my 9 year old sister was beside herself – Doctor Who is back!
[Outpost Gallifrey Forum]And if you didn’t watch it, then give yourself a slap and tune in tomorrow at 7pm on BBC THREE.
