Open Evening = Exhausting!

Today was INSET – giving me the chance to (finally!) catch up on some missing sleep from the Gordon Brown trip last weekend. I got up at the leisurely time of 11, did some Maths homework (there is something very satisfying about solving an equation) ate a Pizza and then set off for canoeing. It was my choice out of the various ‘Enrichment’ activities happening on Wednesday afternoons and a few of us decided to go today on our own. (Technically it’s actually a kayak but meh)

It’s really quite fun going up and down the Sainsbury’s Canal at Ladbroke Grove – learning how to paddle faster, turn round, glide through the water etc. More exciting than learning Latin at least, which was also on offer

And then this evening was Open Evening. The whole Self clan seemed to descend on the school actually… I was helping to take a tour group around, Tash was in the Gym while Mum and Katie went for that exciting ‘move to secondary school’ feeling. Hiten delivered a speech, which was reportedly excellent, while I grabbed a few biscuits (They actually included our ‘high GCSE achievers’ photo in the welcome pack so hey, we’re famous.) It was very polished actually this year – a glossy welcome pack, even a few specially shot videos (with apostrophes in the wrong places). Wasn’t like that in our day!

As I said though – I am now exhausted and will have to sleep so that I’m able to do more school and more Maths homework tomorrow.

But before we get to that, I forgot to add earlier that there was a murder in a house on my road while I was away, and we now have a police man\woman stationed there at all times.

The Moon 'Fact File'

Now on to nicer news – NASA has announced that by 2020, they will put a man on the moon! Imagine that! This will surely be a turning point in civilisation – a new era of space exploration while a world of peace and love will develop here at home! Yessss… exciting times. At least it might shut the snake-oil conspiracy theorists up, unless they think it’ll take the US government 15 years to make another dodgy film in a top secret bunker somewhere. (I am actually very happy about this – I just think it’s interesting how we’re replaying the 1960s. We’ve got Arabs to replace Russians, Iraq to rerun Vietnam and now this!)

See you in the moonbase…

Well, that was an eventful weekend. Hopefully it will pass into legend among the rest of the school, just like last year’s ‘a little too much drink’ incident. The gossip I know you want is that 2 people got sent home on Friday for smoking*, and 2 more were dispatched on Saturday for the same offence! Honestly – surrounded by a dense forest and you still managed to get caught.

Other highlights include the late-night corn field experience, which I’m geekily proud to have brought to you *live*, as it were! We got back around 1am and by 3 I was nice and snug in bed… until the fire alarm went off (guess why) and I had to drag myself out again.

Talking of sleeping arrangements – I found myself in the ultra-l33t room in the girl’s building. While the rest of the males were slumming it in the dorms (sorry guys) us lucky six were enjoying accommodation complete with a direct door to the neighbouring inhabitants and another fire escape for quick exit at the back. It’s not hard to see why I only got 2-3 hours sleep the first night!

I’m currently in the middle of a corn field on a night trek. We’re slightly lost!

I forgot to mention earlier, cause with all the Sixth Form stuff and homework swirling around my mind I kinda forgot as well, but I’m spending the weekend on the Sixth Form Residential at the Gordon Brown Centre. Back on Sunday. Cya!
