Animal rights terrorism

BBC News: Targeted guinea pig farm closes

For the sake of scientific research in this country, we need to strike harder against this form of terrorism which involves grave robbing, “hate mail, malicious phone calls, hoax bombs and arson attacks”.

‘Animal rights’ is always controversial but it should be obvious to any sane person that this kind of activity is not only deeply immoral, it’s illogical. The farm will now return to traditional farming – so animals will still die, but now it’ll just be as food instead of research into potentially life-saving medicines. The only reason people involved in research are targeted is because they’re a minority – a cowardly position if ever there was one.

Hopefully animal rights ‘activists’ will cease using any western medicine and refuse emergency treatment that may have been tested on animals. That would succeed in making them a little less active.

More politics (stop reading now Bagman) as the issue of ‘faith schools’ came up again. Interesting language from Blair today as he said:

The prime minister said axing Muslim schools would mean ending Catholic, Jewish and Protestant schools too.

“Realpolitik” would prevent such a move, said Mr Blair.

Hardly a strong defence of them then. After all, ‘realpolitik’ prevents us from abolishing nasty people or crime, but that doesn’t mean it’s not something we’d like to do.

Why are ‘faith schools’ bad? Because it’s wrong to base a school around a particular ideology – imagine if we introduced ‘Labour’ schools or ‘Vote Eugene’ schools. You’d have thought that a divine, unwavering belief in a supreme power would be able to survive a few hours a day of not being lectured on why that particular supreme power is really really cool.

However, I’ll go along with the spirit of ‘realpolitik’ and respectfully respect a school to support my faith in the Invisible Pink Unicorn (Blessed Be Her Holy Hooves). What do you mean I’m in a small minority? What – like Jesus against all those Romans? OK OK, fair point. In that case – let’s have a Jedi Knight faith school. (Fourth largest reported religion in the country I’ll have you know.)

Moral values call to Tory leader

Conservative traditionalists have entered the fledgling Tory leadership contest by pushing their next leader to fight liberal attitudes.

A group of “socially conservative” Tory MPs say the party should echo George Bush’s “faith, flag and family” slogan.

Yeeeeeeeeees, that’s a great idea! Go for it! Absolutely concentrate on that, because we could learn a lot from them.

Edward Heath was clearly someone who had to content with a lot as Prime Minister in an era where the unions were not playing the role that they should do. He was someone who supported the welfare state, and although I don’t know a great deal about him, I was touched by this quote from the end of the BBC News obituary:

“What wounded him most was the sight of the party he loved rejecting the things he had believed in for a lifetime.”

For a party that desperately needs to get over Thatcher, there’s a lesson there.

The aftermath of a tragedy always carries sick profiteers. Today comes London’s vultures in the shape of the BNP.

BNP campaign uses bus bomb photo

The British National Party has used a photograph of the bombed London bus for an election leaflet.

“Maybe now it’s time to start listening to the BNP,” says the slogan alongside the photo in a leaflet for a council by-election in Barking, east London.

Conservative David Davis continued the Conservative’s mature response to this disaster by slamming the tactic. “This tasteless and bigoted leaflet shows the depths to which the BNP have to sink.” A terror attack isn’t about party politics – unless you’re a cynical opportunist who thinks the first response should be calling for Blair and Bush’s resignation (a certain Mr. G) or a miserable little racist party trying to stir up hatred in the face of the thing they hate most – people coming together.

In memory of everyone who died – I hope this will open people’s eyes to the fascist nature of the BNP.
