Watching the system admin

reddalek

Presumably as some kind of reward for doing that ICT coursework I blogged about yesterday, I got to spend a few hours this afternoon with the systems administrator for my school. While it’s somewhat heart-breaking to watching someone joyfully disable every single system privilege they could possibly disable, I’m glad they’ve got someone who understands security.

Well I say that, but 10 minutes after I was asked to test a new group policy, I discovered I could access the documents of every single user on the network. And install programs. Whoops!

Anyway, I’m now almost homework-free for the weekend. Hopefully I won’t do anything stupid, like waste this precious time blogging to no-one Actually, I really must watch these Matrix DVDs a neighbour lent me. (Yeah that’s right, I missed most of the Matrix hype, only catching the first film on DVD years after it came out.)

Oh, and on Sunday Messenger Plus!, a brilliant add-on to Windows and MSN Messenger which allows you, amongst a huge bundle of extra options, to check POP3 email accounts, releases a new version. Download and enjoy!

I’ve just completed and uploaded my mammoth, 44 page Spreadsheet coursework for ICT that’s worth 15% of my final grade. There are 4 projects like this, and I’ll be cracking on with the 3rd – Databases – next week.

Fairly tired, especially considering last night I wrote a 7 page essay on the women in “An Inspector Calls.” It’s a good thing I’m fond of the play, otherwise I might have been thumping my head into the keyboard by the end.

No rest for me though – there’s Humanities homework to do and more just on the horizon. Still, I’m hugely glad for being fairly on top of it all.

If I wasn’t lucky enough to have a computer in my room – I’d be dead.

Good night

A good MSN friend of mine is in the middle of re-making his website (for
about the 50th time, but we’ll let that pass and it looks wonderful. Do
check out http://www.geocities.com/willfd89, partly because he gave my website a rating of 10/10 for update due to this very blog. Thanks!

Still very much under construction – but I love the design.

Yesterday I spent a very enjoyable day at the John Lewis distribution centre at Park Royal, with a great tour around their amazing warehouse. Think ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ but without chocolate John Lewis are, of course, a partnership (each employee is referred to as a ‘partner’ and get a share of the profits) which strikes me as a much better and fairer way of running a company that the usual style.

Anyway, this weekend would be a great way to relax if I didn’t already have so much homework. Cya…

Now this is good – I’ll certainly be seeing the Blogger web interface less often!

Speaking of blogs, I’ve been reading an awful lot of http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/ recently. It’s the Internet Explorer team blog, which is fascinating to read, because if there is any component of Windows that’s crying out for a big feature update, it’s Internet Explorer. Want to know if tabbed browsing, full CSS support or any other goodies long seen in Firefox (among others) will make there way into the world’s most used browser? Read this.

Ummmm… What else? Well, school is back, along with homework (grr) and lots of cool people too (yay) I’ve already become part of a team that will produce an insert for a local newspaper, and with OFSTEAD (run and hide) coming, I might even get a chance to interview the inspectors. I want to call the article “Who watches the watchers?” but I know I’ll get over ruled
